Sorry is not the same as repair

You said it. Maybe you said it a hundred times. “I'm sorry. It won't happen again.” You meant it every time. And every time, the person across from you looked a little more tired, a little less sure they could believe you.

Here is the hard part. An apology is a beginning, not an ending. When we have hurt someone we love, we want the sorry to close the door so the pain can stop, theirs and ours. But trust does not come back because the words were right. It comes back slowly, through what they see you do when you could have hidden, minimized, or waited for it to blow over.

I sit with people who want to make it right and keep getting stuck in the same loop: a hurt, a quick apology, a push to move on, and then frustration when the other person is not ready. Most of the time that push is not selfishness. It is shame. Staying in the hurt you caused feels unbearable, so you rush to fix it. Fear and shame would rather you apologize fast than let anyone see you for long.

Repair asks for something different. It asks you to slow down and listen without defending. To name what happened in plain words, without “but.” To be honest before you are asked. To let the other person's feelings take as long as they take, and to keep showing up anyway. In counseling we work on what that looks like in your real week, and on what is underneath the patterns that keep causing the hurt in the first place.

You do not have to carry the weight of fixing everything tonight. You just have to stop doing it alone. I sit with adults: individual counseling, couples work, intensives. If a men's group is the room you need, that is Rebuild, a separate lane, strictly for men.

You do not need to have it figured out first. “I'd like a consult” is enough to start. If you want the first conversation without a trap, read what a consult actually looks like.
